Tokaj, a member of world heritage
The world famous settlement in the Hegyalja Wine Region lies at the bottomof Kopasz Hill, at the meeting point of the Rivers Tisza and Bodrog., along the Zemplém Mountains and the Great Plain (Alföld). The small town is the origin and source of production of the well-known “aszú” wine.
Access
By car: from Budapest on motorway M3, then through Miskolc on main road no.37 (250 km)
By train: from Budapest using the intercity tain (Keleti Railway Station). From Frankfurt through Budapest with the EuroCity direct to Tokja.
Nyíregyháza (35 km from Tokaj) and Debrecen (90 km) airports can be used by medium-sized aeroplanes
Programs and sights
Tokaj has a harbour and port on the River Tisza. The town can also be reached by kayak and canoe on the Bodrog from Sárospatak. This area is suitable for fishing, hunting, canoe-tours, water-skiing, boating. A ski-truck is operated in the town every winter. Walking and cycle tour possibilities in the untouched Zemplén lands (monuments, castle ruins, historical sites): Muhi, Miskolc, Eger, Tiszaújváros, Hortobágy, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Mezőkövesd. Programme possibilities: Knight Days, writers’ camp, wine festival, vintage, wine tasting in local wine-cellars, boat trip on the River Bodrog, ‘puszta’ programme in Hortobágy.
